2026-08-10 - Recreation Commission Meeting

Summary

The Charlton Recreation Commission met in person on August 10, 2026 (6:06 to 6:38 p.m.) with a short agenda. Members approved the July 20, 2026 minutes as written on a motion and second. Under new business the commission discussed Old Home Day (Saturday, September 5): no vehicles on the fields and field care. The main concern was divots left on Mayer Field after the Highland Games event in May; a member who volunteers with the Old Home Day committee will talk to the organizers about repairing damage, and another member offered a tractor and trailer of dirt for fill-in on the day. The chair reviewed the printed budget (healthy, with the AED money and league funds still to be counted), noted that the August Slims (portable toilet) bill was paid early in July, and said the lights will be listed as a goal in the upcoming master plan meeting.

Under phone calls and emails, football coaches had questioned the length of the main football field at Mayer Field; the contractor mows every Friday, the length was checked against the contract and found correct, and the field is lined for scrimmages. Playground and field safety checks found no issues, only trash and a strong odor from the portable toilets in the heat; members agreed to email the responsible contact when toilets need service, and discussed litter (mostly teenagers, not coaches or parents) and a possible public "take out what you bring in" campaign tied to Earth Day. A new member discussed his inspection of the facilities with two other members and his goals for a clean, safe, bullying-free playground experience.

Old business: the commission decided to pass on the Healthy Cities wellness (futuristic outdoor fitness) grant because it is expensive (local match possibly $100,000 or more), would add maintenance costs, is a poor fit for a non-urban town, and drew little interest on Facebook; they will keep watching for grants now that the town has an Open Space and Recreation Plan. The pickle ball court (repaired/sealed work follow-up) appears to be holding up and is busy; a possible road-crack-sealing contractor in town was mentioned. No one has exact costs for the capital wish list (softball, soccer, little league); the list stays open to feed small yearly requests to the finance committee. The next meeting was set for September 14 at 6:00 p.m., in person, and the meeting adjourned on a motion and second.

This summary is built from ASR auto-captions with no speaker labels, so names and details may be imperfect.

Issues discussed: Mayer Field Turf Damage and Old Home Day, Healthy Cities Wellness Grant and Prindle Pond Fitness Area, Recreation Facilities Maintenance and Litter, Recreation Youth League Wish Lists and Amazon Fund

People: Patsy Rydlak, Nick Peele

0:07 | All right. Being um August 10th, 2026,
0:11 | it's 6:06 p.m. like to open the
0:14 | recreation meeting for August 10th. Uh
0:17 | call the order. There's some meeting
0:19 | minutes from July 20th, 2026.
0:24 | Brad, I know you were here.
0:26 | >> I was here in spirit, my friend.
0:28 | >> We know that. I thank I thank you for
0:30 | keeping me posted, Paty, as well.
0:33 | >> Good. So, uh, Paty, you
0:35 | >> I did review I did review the minutes um
0:37 | >> um earlier today. They look look good
0:39 | with me. So, make a motion that we um
0:42 | accept the minutes as written.
0:44 | >> All right, I second that. All those
0:46 | approved.
0:47 | >> I
0:48 | >> I'm sorry, I didn't say the date in July
0:50 | 2026. All right,
0:53 | >> new business. I had um Loren add old
0:56 | home day discussion just to it only
0:58 | because I don't think I don't know if we
0:59 | have another meeting before old home day
1:01 | coming up
1:02 | >> it's on
1:04 | right
1:05 | >> yeah so we
1:06 | >> should have one
1:07 | >> it'll be September it will be like
1:09 | September 5th
1:12 | >> we probably won't
1:13 | >> I left my phone outside
1:14 | >> that's fine
1:16 | >> yeah just for dates
1:21 | so did we it's more or less just No, no
1:23 | vehicles on the field and just stuff
1:26 | like that.
1:26 | >> And I'm I'm there or now he's there.
1:28 | He's like on the old building, too. So,
1:31 | um we
1:32 | >> we know and we're setting up so no one
1:34 | goes down there. What there's there's
1:36 | bouncing houses like there is every
1:38 | year, but they don't dig holes or
1:40 | anything. I think the biggest issue is
1:43 | the um the the the Highland the Highland
1:46 | games and because
1:48 | >> they do that on the whole home day too.
1:49 | >> Yeah. So, but they do, but we're there.
1:52 | >> Yes.
1:53 | >> So, it's a little bit um different and
1:55 | they do um bring the dirt, fill in their
1:58 | holes and stuff, but I'll make extra
2:01 | special.
2:02 | >> I'll pay attention to that.
2:04 | >> Um and
2:06 | >> so now that you mentioned that I Mayor
2:08 | Field, there's one of the coaches
2:09 | because there's two teams of practice up
2:11 | there, a U6 team and then a U1 team. I
2:14 | used six five gallon pills of screen to
2:17 | fill it to fill in the holes. I don't
2:19 | even think I got them all. That was only
2:21 | on the one.
2:21 | >> Call me if you need help.
2:22 | >> Yeah. No, I appreciate
2:23 | >> I appreciate it because I need the
2:24 | exercise. All right. I really do.
2:27 | >> But I was just taken back. I I spent
2:29 | like uh hour and a half, two hours one
2:32 | morning uh that Monday morning after the
2:34 | Blueberry Festival. So I tried to do it
2:36 | that morning,
2:37 | >> but all the tents are all set up. I'm
2:38 | like, "Oh, I told my boys, no, we can't
2:40 | do it today."
2:41 | >> So you heard that the Highland they left
2:44 | like in that was like back when they did
2:45 | it in the spring, right?
2:46 | >> May I think May was their back? They did
2:48 | that big event that they they used
2:50 | Maynard and they just left a lot of
2:52 | holes. Now
2:53 | >> the big event I'm sorry
2:54 | >> um Highland Games.
2:55 | >> I must have missed that.
2:56 | >> Um so um so I know that
3:00 | >> I um
3:02 | so I know that they put I mean you know
3:05 | he's a member of the old home day
3:07 | committee too. So he's I know that they
3:10 | he puts a lot of effort in. I'm just me
3:12 | I I'm just not sure if they did a as
3:16 | complete job as they normally do because
3:18 | we've like in in the past years like
3:20 | Diane had like Diane who been there and
3:22 | they and they've showed up and they like
3:24 | they have done a really good job fixing
3:26 | it. So so it's it was just weird when
3:29 | you said that because I didn't expect
3:30 | it. It isn't like a normal thing that
3:33 | we've ever that they've ever like walked
3:35 | away because this with the time frame.
3:37 | So I I'll I'll have um uh a conversation
3:42 | and I will also double check and
3:46 | >> I may be able to offer you something
3:48 | along with that conversation. You know
3:50 | how every year at old home day I use my
3:52 | high-speed contractor
3:56 | >> say right?
3:56 | >> Yeah. Right.
3:57 | >> Still 20 horse but gearing's different
4:00 | stuff's taking off. Right.
4:02 | >> But it does have a trailer. So, what I'm
4:05 | thinking is since I'm elected to be one
4:07 | of the golf cardies this year,
4:11 | maybe what I could do is
4:14 | I'm not sure. I'd have to stash it
4:17 | somewhere the night before or just bring
4:19 | it down early on day, but I could leave
4:23 | my tractor
4:25 | and
4:27 | >> a trailer full of dirt.
4:30 | Well, see what they because it's on a
4:32 | responsibility to repair.
4:34 | >> I'm not letting them do it. They're
4:35 | going to make it worth it to me.
4:36 | >> No, no, it's their responsibility. But
4:39 | I'm going to make all the ingredients
4:41 | there if you'd like. I have no problem
4:43 | with this.
4:45 | >> Dirt tractor starts every time.
4:49 | >> Yeah.
4:50 | >> And we'll make it easy for them to
4:51 | repair any damage because that's
4:52 | unacceptable.
4:53 | >> And we'll we'll talk to Rob. We'll we'll
4:55 | we'll talk to them and um and you and I
5:00 | can talk and see. And
5:02 | >> it's great entertainment. I enjoy it. I
5:04 | I would like to keep coming back, but I
5:06 | don't want to cast a I don't want to
5:07 | cast a,
5:10 | you know,
5:12 | bad light on.
5:13 | >> Yeah.
5:15 | No, we want them. They're a good
5:16 | addition. We just got to We have to just
5:18 | make sure that all the, you know, all
5:20 | the tees are crossed and eyes are dotted
5:21 | with the fields and everything. And
5:23 | >> I'm just going to plan on putting the
5:25 | tractor and trailer down there. We'll
5:26 | get the dirt either from my house or
5:28 | yours. Yeah,
5:28 | >> find dirt. We'll put the trailer and uh
5:32 | I'm scared if I leave it, somebody will
5:33 | steal it because everybody knows how to
5:35 | steal a lawn tractor in Chelton. But
5:37 | >> it's got no mowing deck, no nothing on
5:39 | it. It just it's a it's goes like a
5:41 | tractor.
5:41 | >> Yeah.
5:42 | >> Well, we we'll um
5:43 | >> that's the end of that for me. Thank
5:44 | you.
5:45 | >> No, perfect. That's Well, and you and I
5:46 | will talk about that. We'll figure it
5:48 | out in
5:50 | >> All right. Perfect. All right. Um, I
5:52 | don't have any action items
5:56 | at this time.
5:58 | And then I printed out well bills. We
6:01 | did uh we double paid the uh slims since
6:04 | we had a late meeting last month. So we
6:05 | paid for August already in July at our
6:08 | last meeting.
6:09 | >> Then finance here is just I printed this
6:11 | out so everyone can see what the current
6:14 | budget is, what we've used, what's
6:16 | ahead.
6:23 | No, that
6:25 | >> no one actually watches the videos or
6:26 | anything. Um, so
6:28 | >> they shouldn't watch.
6:29 | >> No, they they don't release the minutes.
6:31 | We get We release paper minutes, I
6:33 | think.
6:33 | >> Yeah.
6:34 | >> Um, if they wanted to and maybe somebody
6:37 | wanted
6:37 | >> Please keep talking.
6:39 | >> So, is this before the the um the AED
6:43 | money?
6:44 | is
6:45 | >> I don't know if
6:47 | >> it's I don't think that that's after
6:49 | anything from any of the league would
6:51 | grow and
6:53 | >> that's still fine more than a great
6:55 | amount very comfortable
6:58 | kids a good time with that
7:00 | >> I know nobody listens to this but we're
7:02 | going to give some kids a good time with
7:04 | that
7:04 | >> yeah doubt
7:06 | >> and it'll be much easier I'll make sure
7:08 | that when we when we go and do that and
7:11 | and we have finally have a master
7:14 | um meeting one that everybody's actually
7:16 | invited to.
7:18 | >> Um we mention the lights. I'll like
7:21 | specifically put the lights as
7:22 | discussion as a as a goal on the master
7:25 | plan which because you know things are
7:27 | never fast but we master plan should you
7:30 | know a year or so year
7:33 | goes in line with the light. So we make
7:35 | kind of that
7:36 | >> it all you know all the little you know
7:39 | all the little box you know check it
7:41 | should be there. So with the development
7:42 | of the fields and
7:44 | >> Right. All right. Perfect. All right. Uh
7:47 | next up, phone calls, emails, and
7:49 | requests. Um no phone calls, no emails.
7:53 | Well, just the email was for the um
7:56 | couple of the football coaches were
7:57 | mentioning about the length of the Mayor
7:59 | Field football field. Um it was long. So
8:03 | I'd emailed main last week to have Nick
8:05 | check.
8:06 | >> Which field?
8:07 | >> Main football field. The lower one where
8:09 | the kids play football. way down below.
8:11 | >> Right.
8:11 | >> Yep. So, I did have Nick check what the
8:16 | contract said for the length and they
8:18 | mow every Friday and I checked on
8:20 | Saturday and it was to the correct. So,
8:23 | just because kids have already started
8:26 | scrimmages
8:27 | part of the field is lined so that was
8:31 | just one thing that got taken care of
8:33 | which is great. Uh safety check of
8:35 | playground and fields. I know I've been
8:38 | lacking on it. Um I don't see any issues
8:40 | with that. I went down check the pickle
8:42 | ball court this afternoon see fine but
8:44 | anything there's just been trash I've
8:46 | had to pick up.
8:47 | >> Yeah it's the same thing whenever we go
8:48 | there's just I mean and and um and if I
8:51 | did go like every once in a while you go
8:53 | and the the trash is like now then I'll
8:55 | make a call but
8:56 | >> correct
8:56 | >> there isn't if if I go to pick a couple
8:58 | of bottles of the kids that kids left.
9:00 | >> Yeah. And also just keep an eye on the
9:04 | the toilet condition. I know some of the
9:07 | the stench has been kind of heavy
9:10 | >> and the heat the heat adds to it
9:12 | >> the heat or
9:14 | >> but it's just it's always something
9:16 | >> is always good about taking care of it
9:18 | as soon as they're called but they they
9:20 | I mean
9:21 | >> yeah schedule
9:24 | >> no correct
9:24 | >> it's hard to call ahead of time but
9:27 | >> I know I' I've been down and every time
9:30 | I because I get on I have a cigarette
9:32 | with my mother my cousin y
9:34 | >> right down back.
9:36 | >> Yep.
9:38 | >> They're both dead.
9:41 | >> I try to swim through all of those.
9:44 | >> Yeah.
9:44 | >> Just see what's going on. Pick up trash.
9:47 | I see.
9:48 | >> I don't know if there's way to get more
9:50 | trash cans. I don't know if that's the
9:52 | solution. Maybe the solution is to
9:54 | relocate the trash cans to where
9:56 | somebody is
10:01 | >> more heavily tempted to mess around with
10:02 | them. Don't know if that's an election.
10:05 | Don't know enough about it.
10:05 | >> I think that is people like I think like
10:07 | all the M like the risers, right? So
10:09 | kids there's always trash under the
10:11 | risers and yeah and and people can sit
10:13 | there and there's a place just oh trash
10:17 | >> um there's a there's like risers again
10:20 | there's it's there's trash where
10:21 | typically trash gets like in front of
10:24 | the fence because people
10:27 | Yeah. I I don't
10:28 | >> they should take out what they bring in
10:31 | the
10:31 | >> or just throw it in the trash.
10:33 | >> How do we encourage that?
10:34 | >> I mean, I'm just happy there's no
10:35 | graffiti issues or anything. So, I mean,
10:37 | whatever. A little bit of trash. I'm
10:38 | good. So, um
10:40 | >> very welcome.
10:41 | >> But yeah, the big thing is like, yeah,
10:42 | if all if if we notice it, we I mean, we
10:46 | if if the toilets do need to be done,
10:48 | should we like
10:51 | and then we just shoot an email?
10:53 | >> Okay.
10:53 | >> Just those that's the protocol and she's
10:58 | I I'm as Pat will tell you when this
11:01 | you're finding out.
11:03 | >> Um I'm not
11:06 | >> I didn't grow up in the 90s, so
11:09 | >> No, no, I have I have email, but
11:11 | >> just text me if you notice something.
11:13 | Just text me if you trouble.
11:15 | >> Well, I know you
11:17 | >> you got plenty to do, too. I'm wondering
11:20 | if I could use you.
11:21 | >> Yeah,
11:22 | >> absolutely. I mean, you work for you got
11:25 | a good boss. I was like,
11:26 | >> I work for yourself.
11:27 | >> Yeah, I worked for That's what I'm
11:29 | saying. You're the best boss on earth.
11:31 | >> I don't know about that.
11:32 | >> Um, well, I work for the federal
11:33 | government. Look at where I'm sitting.
11:35 | >> Yeah.
11:35 | >> The um
11:37 | >> if you wouldn't mind if I notice
11:38 | something out of line down there.
11:40 | >> I'd love to be able to text you. Not
11:44 | text.
11:45 | >> All right.
11:46 | >> Do what?
11:47 | >> This is the This is what I've noticed
11:49 | most down here. Now, we did do an
11:52 | inspection down there, Paty and I and
11:55 | Steve.
11:55 | >> Yep.
11:56 | >> And you know, we
11:59 | actually what happened since you and I
12:01 | have spoken last is is plenty.
12:05 | P's been good enough to go around with
12:06 | me.
12:07 | >> Mhm.
12:09 | >> And we went every place.
12:13 | >> Yeah.
12:14 | >> Three of us have any jurisdiction at
12:16 | all.
12:16 | >> Yeah. And you know,
12:18 | I'm very grateful for that. I learned an
12:20 | awful lot that day. I had really I mean,
12:23 | Charleton has a lot to offer, but now I
12:25 | really know why people move here. Okay,
12:27 | one darn good reason why people move
12:30 | here. We do have and the uh I mean I
12:34 | have I there are certain places I'd like
12:37 | to discuss. Maybe it's not for here now.
12:39 | But um the the trash thing if if there's
12:44 | a way we can encourage people to be more
12:48 | more in the spirit of scouting.
12:51 | I wasn't a scout, but even I know well
12:54 | enough to take out what I bring in.
12:55 | >> Oh yeah.
12:56 | >> Or just kind citizens in general. That's
12:57 | it. I mean just being a normal decent
13:00 | person. A decent person.
13:02 | >> You know, it's little stuff makes a
13:03 | difference. Like if a place is open like
13:06 | here or town hall, you know what I've
13:09 | seen a lot of towns in New Hampshire do?
13:10 | They'll put a sign with right and a
13:14 | thing on top says open underneath. I'm
13:17 | looking right at you, New Boston, New
13:20 | Hampshire with their brand new Morton
13:24 | >> firehouse
13:25 | >> and police. It's safety complex.
13:27 | >> Yes,
13:27 | >> it's Morton and it's wonderful, right?
13:30 | >> Uh they also have bunk space in there.
13:33 | Yeah. Wonder how they did that. It's not
13:36 | a New Hampshire thing.
13:37 | >> Right.
13:38 | >> But sign says open. Come on in.
13:43 | >> Yeah.
13:44 | >> Okay. And that spirit is that I've had
13:49 | way too much coffee and way too many
13:50 | cigarettes. I apologize for water in my
13:52 | mouth.
13:54 | But if we can make it so that somehow,
13:57 | and I know we can make it so people
14:00 | almost feel like they're rewarding
14:01 | themselves by not being slobless,
14:04 | you know, don't throw your rib, you
14:06 | know, don't throw your chicken, don't
14:08 | throw your wings.
14:09 | >> Well, there's the there's the um invite
14:10 | like the uh the Earth Day people that
14:12 | really do.
14:15 | So, it's
14:15 | >> I mean, I'm not on the committee, but I
14:17 | mean, I do it every week,
14:19 | >> but they they promote throughout the
14:21 | year. So, maybe we maybe Maybe there's
14:24 | just a campaign in general, but but for
14:26 | the playgrounds for the playground
14:28 | purpose purpose, um it's, you know, I I
14:31 | don't think that the the parents are
14:33 | bringing their little kids in their own
14:34 | trash. It's the teenagers that go and
14:36 | they hang out there and they throw their
14:37 | trash and and that and it is and I think
14:40 | that's a problem like everywhere in the
14:42 | whole entire country, not even like the
14:45 | country. It's just an issue.
14:46 | >> Oh, it's certainly a problem. But
14:48 | there's stuff that like adds
14:49 | information.
14:50 | >> And we don't have a lot of hangers, you
14:52 | know, we have a couple of people that
14:54 | will stop, you know, in your field, use
14:55 | it a lot. Sometimes during the day, I've
14:58 | seen guys that work construction meet
14:59 | their lives. There's a lot of this stuff
15:01 | going on. Right.
15:01 | >> Right.
15:02 | >> But I go anywhere I want, anytime I
15:05 | want. And I don't see a lot of, you
15:08 | know,
15:12 | I don't see a lot of teenagers slash I
15:15 | don't know what generation they have,
15:17 | but you know, say folks from 18 to 25. I
15:22 | don't see a lot of them hanging around.
15:24 | >> Yeah.
15:25 | >> So, this is just kids that got habits
15:27 | that it's better if we could break them
15:29 | now somehow. But it's not nighttime
15:31 | people hanging around. I don't think
15:34 | along with what you think it's not the
15:35 | coaches. I don't think any coach in his
15:38 | right mind would promote or allow
15:41 | kids to leave litter behind.
15:43 | >> Right.
15:43 | >> This is
15:44 | >> just regular just regular
15:47 | empty thing. Yeah. It's
15:48 | >> it's just an old age.
15:50 | >> It is and it isn't and it isn't that
15:52 | bad. The only time it's ever bad is when
15:54 | the trash is like they something happens
15:56 | down there the trashes are overflow and
15:57 | the wind blows it. Correct. like there
15:58 | isn't really I mean or or it's been you
16:01 | know a couple of weeks like I I know if
16:03 | I if I constantly go it's it's not as
16:05 | bad in and um and everybody else like
16:07 | like I even tell myself when it drives
16:09 | by the soft right so it is I think
16:11 | that's a a discussion that's not that's
16:14 | not quite recreation it's more of a a
16:16 | town culture thing you know we people
16:18 | throw trash in the road and stuff I
16:20 | think that's just a um a and then every
16:23 | day at Earth Day it gets really hot
16:25 | everybody starts talking about the trash
16:26 | in the road
16:27 | >> yes and then it kind of goes away and
16:29 | then it comes back. It's just one of
16:30 | those things. We we're not going to
16:32 | solve that's like solving world hunger
16:34 | and peace, you know, like um we're not
16:36 | gonna we're not going to solve that. We
16:38 | can try. You can try.
16:39 | >> Oh, yeah. I I'll do what I'll do
16:42 | whatever I can. I mean, I'm open to any
16:44 | suggestions from anybody, not just you
16:45 | two. I do my street and my street's
16:48 | long. It lines around. kind of goes
16:50 | through a couple of dissections, you
16:51 | know,
16:52 | >> three guests you told Wheelock and then
16:57 | there's a bunch, but
17:00 | >> I did a week ago and it looks like an
17:02 | explosion in a fast food factory up
17:04 | there.
17:05 | >> Yeah.
17:05 | >> I mean, tonight on the way here, there's
17:07 | stuff that wasn't there when I left at
17:10 | 1:00 to go to the grocery store that
17:12 | ballooned into this big thing with
17:14 | animal control and some sightings of my
17:16 | dog.
17:19 | I was like, who is coming by here? And
17:21 | you can tell it's the same people. You
17:24 | know
17:25 | >> what the trash is.
17:27 | >> Yeah, that's I mean that's something
17:29 | that's a talent.
17:30 | >> I'm just trying.
17:31 | >> You know what that's you should go talk
17:33 | to.
17:34 | >> Oh, no. I do. Well, see the thing is I
17:37 | don't like to bother him. And you know,
17:38 | today he was being the gentleman. They
17:40 | were giving out traffic. Kick us like
17:42 | free McDonald's burgers up on Stafford
17:44 | Street. I'm all about it. Yeah. I drive
17:46 | my square bodies. I drive 30 and you
17:48 | know where you can go if you don't like
17:49 | it.
17:50 | >> Yeah.
17:50 | >> Try to hit me. I'll win.
17:51 | >> Right.
17:52 | >> But my thing is I'm not fortunate enough
17:55 | to have children.
17:56 | >> Yes. So I think and the reason why I
17:59 | wanted to get involved with this
18:00 | committee is we got to provide the best
18:02 | experience possible for those kids. As I
18:04 | know when I was in we moved from New
18:08 | York City
18:12 | up to Grafton
18:14 | in 1966
18:16 | and then 1969
18:19 | 68 fall of 68 I think it was we moved to
18:22 | Milbury
18:24 | Prospect Street and
18:28 | Two and a half years later,
18:30 | we moved to Westboro.
18:35 | So between
18:37 | halfway through fourth grade, the time I
18:40 | graduated, I lived in three towns.
18:43 | >> And they were very different then, not
18:45 | like they are now,
18:45 | >> right? But
18:48 | you can see the trend through the years
18:50 | about which towns did what for the kids,
18:53 | how the kids ended up, what they had to
18:55 | do, the choices they made along the way.
18:58 | You know, I I every time somebody says
19:00 | library to me, you know what pops into
19:02 | my mind? Not Dexter Hall. I love Dexter
19:05 | Hall. I think it's great. I really do.
19:07 | Especially Well, just I think it's
19:09 | great. But when I think of a library, I
19:12 | think of grafting.
19:14 | Graph is never filled. Yeah,
19:16 | >> there's a place out in New York that
19:20 | has has a good library, too. Little town
19:23 | thing. They have a library. They have a
19:26 | good place. They lost stuff.
19:28 | The whole thing with Earth Day, this is
19:30 | I guess what I'm getting at is
19:34 | I remember the first Earth Day really
19:35 | well. We all rode our bikes to school,
19:38 | >> you know, and and that was our way of
19:40 | saying green. I have solar panels on my
19:42 | roof. From that day, I said somehow
19:45 | somewhere I'm gonna be like that. I'm
19:49 | gonna do the right thing and I'm gonna
19:50 | put solar. It was great, man. I got
19:52 | electric. There's only two of us.
19:54 | There's no kids.
19:56 | >> But setting a good example for the kids
19:59 | going forward
20:01 | is
20:03 | totally where I'm at. Totally where I'm
20:05 | at. So, I guess I said all this about
20:11 | trash. I got no tolerance for
20:13 | >> people have mistreated animals.
20:16 | >> The third one is totally outside this
20:18 | committee scope but it's has to do with
20:21 | abuse of woman
20:22 | >> abuse of a woman.
20:24 | >> Yep.
20:25 | >> Something else I don't have anything
20:26 | I'll say that to anybody but we want to
20:29 | make sure that those kids when they go
20:31 | to the playground that we can do what we
20:34 | can do just our little group here no
20:36 | bullying clean equipment swings that
20:40 | aren't broken. I don't know if they even
20:41 | allow seesaws anymore. They're probably
20:43 | out,
20:44 | >> but
20:46 | everything we can do.
20:48 | >> We do the details. I I know. I I just
20:51 | want to amplify it. I can't if I can.
20:55 | I'm talking way too much, man. I've had
20:57 | >> We We don't have We don't have that many
21:00 | facilities
21:01 | >> that like It's not like we're It's not
21:02 | like we're in the city where we have a
21:04 | thousand facilities and we're we have
21:06 | eight playgrounds,
21:07 | >> right?
21:07 | >> So, it it stays pretty clean.
21:09 | >> Yes, we have. We have surprises like
21:12 | show.
21:14 | >> Yeah. like and and again that's why
21:16 | we're we're like a potentially a
21:18 | potential playground of that health like
21:20 | a simple one like like that like but
21:23 | that but we're
21:24 | >> that's that's master kind of master plan
21:27 | stuff once we get in the master plan
21:29 | then we can
21:31 | >> and that's how we forgive me represented
21:34 | on master where does this
21:37 | >> I'm chair of the committee and I'm on
21:38 | this I'm on this board
21:41 | >> I'm on this commission and I'm also the
21:42 | chair of the master plan committ And you
21:44 | know, so we're pretty well
21:46 | representative.
21:48 | >> We're very well.
21:49 | >> Do not call.
21:51 | >> That's right.
21:53 | >> Thank you.
21:54 | >> We're we're strongly represent.
21:58 | >> All right.
21:58 | >> Myself some more coffee. Sorry.
22:00 | >> That's all right. You're good. Moving on
22:02 | to old business. A healthy city c city's
22:05 | wellness grant. Just a followup. Um I
22:08 | know Pat you threw something on Facebook
22:11 | to try and get a public
22:13 | uh feel for it and I'll let you
22:16 | elaborate on
22:17 | >> Yeah. So, so I I did the research and
22:19 | it's it's a little it's a little um
22:21 | different than what we normally see
22:22 | here. It's like a really like a um I say
22:26 | futuristic uh
22:30 | more like a a fixed
22:34 | anybody who's listening to this can go
22:35 | on Facebook and see the um that the
22:37 | healthy city they have images. It's it's
22:40 | really um to get people out to exercise
22:43 | just because we're not a city and the
22:45 | way for someone to come out to do that
22:49 | at one of the I just can't imagine it be
22:51 | a being a hit here in Charleston. Um
22:54 | it's very expensive the grant itself
22:58 | because of I mean even if we got 50,000
23:01 | we would still have to probably come up
23:02 | with you know another $100,000 to be
23:06 | able to make it. only need a few million
23:07 | to make it possible should I desire for
23:11 | me to be able to walk from my house to
23:15 | here.
23:15 | >> Yeah.
23:15 | >> Which isn't an unreal. You know where I
23:17 | live. It isn't an it's not
23:21 | >> we don't have any way to get across
23:22 | Route 20.
23:23 | >> Yeah.
23:24 | >> Fit here. I agree completely with this
23:25 | particular green. It just it just
23:26 | doesn't it just doesn't seem like it's a
23:28 | fit and there wasn't a bunch of
23:29 | excitement out on it like on on social
23:32 | media.
23:32 | >> Um so, you know, pass on that. But we
23:36 | definitely um need to just keep our eyes
23:39 | and ears out for um grants now that we
23:42 | have we have that recreation and open
23:44 | space plan that um that that other
23:47 | people in Charleston kind of created um
23:49 | for that the need um it was a committee
23:52 | formed. There's open space and
23:54 | recreation committee formed. I didn't
23:56 | even know about it. It was a surprise.
23:57 | Um and there's so now that we have an
24:00 | actual plan, we're more eligible for
24:02 | grants.
24:03 | So we so if we do hear one um and I keep
24:07 | my eyes open but um just because of the
24:10 | kind of town we are higher income
24:13 | >> um like uh um not as diverse to be
24:16 | attractive to get grants. Um but we
24:20 | still keep eye or keep eyes other ones
24:22 | but yeah that
24:24 | >> what if we what if we applied for the
24:25 | grant set up that we sit on it and say
24:28 | well we'll act on it you know after uh
24:31 | you know We have time frame.
24:35 | >> So, it's a a lot of work to put the
24:37 | application together for the whole
24:39 | proposal and for something that I just
24:41 | can't see even if it was given to us. I
24:45 | can't see it being I think I was
24:46 | thinking it's going to be a lot. We're
24:48 | going to have to hire people to maintain
24:50 | it. Like, we're going to have to it's
24:51 | one more thing to maintain. I I just
24:52 | don't think
24:53 | >> What is it? 50 gram of something.
24:56 | >> No, it's probably like 30 or 40. It
24:58 | could be more. I'll show it to you
25:00 | after. It's not I I'll find out.
25:03 | >> Yeah, I'll show it to you after what it
25:04 | is. It is It's It's um It's a It's a
25:07 | futuristic adult playground kind of
25:09 | thing.
25:11 | >> I live in an adult playground, man. My
25:13 | amplifier is crowns.
25:16 | >> Yeah. Okay. All right. Thank you.
25:18 | >> All right. Follow up on New England Se
25:20 | for pickle ball court. I think they're
25:21 | just calling to do a check in
25:23 | >> more than anything. Yeah.
25:25 | >> Aren't they doing some other business in
25:26 | town while we're at it?
25:28 | >> Newland Seal Co. I haven't seen that
25:29 | truck. I
25:30 | >> I'm not sure. But I
25:31 | >> doing driveway stuff. Who knows?
25:32 | >> No, I've seen that, but I I just recall
25:34 | seeing something in one of the um in
25:37 | fact, I think it's a tomorrow's uh Isn't
25:39 | it a line item in tomorrow's board
25:41 | meeting?
25:42 | >> Or maybe it was a I saw it in somebody's
25:44 | line item that uh somebody is going to
25:47 | use that new uh beautiful acrylic way to
25:51 | seal cracks in our roads.
25:54 | >> It's great. Flexes in the winter time.
25:56 | doesn't
25:57 | must be with what Nick has presented
26:00 | something.
26:00 | >> I'm just wondering is there a way if if
26:03 | and I know that there were dates
26:05 | scheduled for this. It's got to be on
26:07 | the board of select.
26:08 | >> Oh, all right. Doing select roads in
26:10 | town.
26:11 | >> There were seems to be five or six roads
26:13 | that were scheduled to be done.
26:14 | >> Must be chips still then as well.
26:16 | >> It could be. Yeah. Yeah.
26:18 | >> Could Yeah, could be because it's the
26:19 | same ones that did it last time they did
26:21 | my street. They're doing my street
26:22 | again. Lord knows why. But um I guess
26:25 | I'm not a road engineer. I'm a railroad
26:27 | engineer. So I guess that's why they
26:29 | decided to do it again.
26:31 | >> So maybe there's a way we can use them.
26:32 | Great. I didn't take any exception
26:35 | court. It seems to me that it's
26:36 | >> holding up. I think so.
26:38 | >> Yeah. For alternative purposes that are
26:40 | working out just fine for those kids
26:42 | that are down there using it.
26:43 | >> Yeah.
26:44 | >> It's pretty busy. It's good good going
26:47 | on down there.
26:48 | >> All right. Then follow up on the wish
26:49 | list. Uh no no one's has got uh exact
26:54 | cost.
26:56 | softball,
26:58 | um, soccer or little league. So,
27:00 | >> it's hard with summer, too. Every busy
27:03 | >> these guys softball and little league,
27:05 | they're starting up fall, too. So,
27:08 | >> I know the signups have been come out
27:10 | >> and it will be good, too. Um, we keep
27:14 | the wish list open and so then every
27:16 | year we ask for a little bit like when
27:18 | we go to we do our budgets, we never we
27:19 | our budget's always the exact same every
27:21 | year. So, you know, if if there's
27:23 | something, you know, it's it's 10,000
27:25 | and it's going to be a rate, we can add
27:27 | it when we go and we we can meet with
27:29 | the budget committee and we can the
27:31 | finance committee and say, you know,
27:33 | we're going to we're this is our capital
27:35 | plan. Yeah. This year we want to do a
27:37 | little bit every year and and ask for
27:38 | that and and when we get a bigger list
27:41 | in numbers, we'll be able to have a
27:43 | meeting and really focus on
27:46 | what's the best way to to get through
27:48 | those expenses a little bit at a time,
27:50 | you know, in in the town.
27:52 | >> Exactly. Exactly. I want And plus I want
27:54 | to utilize that wish list for these
27:57 | leagues, too.
27:58 | >> Yeah. I want Yeah, absolutely.
28:00 | >> Without a doubt. Sure. So, all right. If
28:04 | no one has anything else for the next
28:07 | meeting date,
28:11 | September because maybe the 7th.
28:13 | >> Are y'all in a rush to exit the
28:15 | premises?
28:16 | >> No, not yet. I just want to stick to
28:18 | that.
28:18 | >> I I just need a little help with
28:19 | something outside.
28:20 | >> No problem.
28:21 | >> Okay.
28:21 | >> Without a doubt.
28:22 | >> Next meeting.
28:23 | >> Yeah. So, Labor Day is the 7th.
28:26 | >> When's old home?
28:28 | >> That's the fifth the fifth will be old
28:29 | home day. That
28:30 | >> having that on Saturday night?
28:31 | >> I'm sorry. You're right.
28:37 | Yes.
28:39 | >> And so wise
28:49 | >> the 21st is is fine for me if it works
28:52 | for although 14 late is
28:54 | >> probably fine too. So whatever works
28:56 | better.
28:57 | >> It's monthly. Okay.
28:59 | >> Yeah.
28:59 | >> Yeah. We should do one.
29:02 | >> I don't want to skip that. Oh, no. I
29:03 | don't think my my point was
29:05 | >> I'm new.
29:06 | >> Yeah.
29:07 | >> I don't want to make it of myself. So,
29:11 | um would I benefit by asking you all? Is
29:15 | there anything that I can learn at these
29:17 | meetings that I can't learn by um
29:20 | getting together perhaps with you,
29:22 | perhaps with Paty walking around
29:24 | somewhere?
29:25 | >> No, I I mean I think I just learned from
29:27 | as as I as I went. Um we and after we
29:31 | can we can talk about all like our our
29:34 | responsibilities and like they're
29:36 | they're um they're very specific like
29:39 | the the grounds to portaotties and
29:42 | handling issues. So if there is an issue
29:45 | we would schedule another meeting. If
29:46 | all of a sudden there was a big war down
29:49 | at the down
29:52 | there was a huge issue we would have a
29:54 | we would just have a meeting and
29:55 | >> do an emergency meeting. the way we're
29:57 | planning it's not there's not there's
29:59 | it's not like we have applicants coming
30:01 | in you know or anything like that um so
30:05 | it doesn't make any sense to just meet
30:07 | to meet if if there's a reason to meet
30:09 | we'll schedule them to meet
30:10 | >> correct
30:11 | >> and if you have questions then reach out
30:12 | to one of us we I mean not that not that
30:14 | I know everything
30:16 | >> I'm very grateful for that I just didn't
30:17 | know that's why I was asking
30:19 | >> I think just to keep up with stuff is
30:21 | good to just do once a month but if like
30:23 | nothing
30:23 | >> because we have bills that I do once a
30:25 | month and that kind of stuff So, um and
30:27 | in in for planning, I think we might
30:29 | have two before the um before the um
30:34 | >> we have two in the spring. I forget.
30:36 | There was two one month that we had two
30:38 | because we're scheduling all the were
30:41 | team schedule.
30:42 | >> Yes.
30:42 | >> When we were trying to figure out the
30:44 | team schedule, right? So we had to do
30:45 | two because we had a meeting with with
30:47 | like one set of um sports and then the
30:49 | other set of sports and they were long
30:51 | meetings that and that might have been
30:52 | last year too but
30:54 | >> but that's the only time
30:55 | >> that coming again this year
30:57 | >> usually it's time consuming with the
30:58 | with the all presidents meeting of the
31:00 | league we're not
31:02 | >> and that's again I think that's
31:05 | spring
31:06 | >> I'll hear about it
31:07 | >> yeah without a doubt
31:08 | >> y
31:09 | >> so do we like the 14th to the 21st
31:11 | better
31:12 | way at all or anything Brad you coming
31:14 | up.
31:15 | >> My idea in a way book
31:16 | >> Yeah.
31:17 | >> is competitive eating.
31:18 | >> Okay.
31:18 | >> I like my own dining room.
31:20 | >> I'll just do the 14th.
31:22 | >> Okay.
31:22 | >> All right. September 14th at 6:00.
31:26 | >> May we have it here any chance?
31:28 | September 14th
31:30 | at 1800.
31:33 | >> You want to do another in person?
31:37 | >> So cool.
31:40 | Is this out of the way?
31:41 | >> Yeah, we'll do it in person again. No
31:44 | problem. I have no problem. I can
31:46 | possibly say
31:47 | >> I I love seeing you guys and I you
31:50 | slippery as an eel to see you're doing
31:52 | so much and you have a great boss and he
31:56 | he works your butt off
31:58 | >> and and that great.
32:02 | >> So I make a motion that we adjourn the
32:05 | meeting.
32:06 | >> We gonna have your next time.
32:07 | >> Yep.
32:09 | >> All right. I second that. All those in
32:11 | favor?
32:11 | >> I
32:12 | >> I I Right. 6:38 the ending of the
32:16 | meeting.
