Young Cemetery Restoration
Context
A private, overgrown African-American cemetery behind the Housing Authority property that may hold Buffalo Soldiers and other veterans. A local business owner (captioned Joe Graves or Joe Gray) is leading an effort with the Historic Preservation Commission and the Young family; about 130 names may be documented from library records, and the state historic preservation office may assist. Access is difficult (housing authority, a bridge washed out long ago, sewer easement). Details come from auto-captions.
Status
The city is only helping document; the committee chair stressed on September 9, 2026 that it remains a private cemetery and is not a city project. A presentation to council is planned later.
Log
- 2026-09-09 - Real Estate Committee - Chuck George updated members; city's role limited to documentation and historic preservation help.
